Applus+ Certification has achieved a significant milestone by verifying Switzerland’s first and only VCS-registered project, a pioneering initiative aimed at reducing methane emissions in the Swiss dairy sector.
Applus+ Certification, a leading provider of testing and certification services, has successfully completed the first verification of emission reductions for a groundbreaking project in the Swiss dairy sector under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). This milestone, achieved in September 2024, marks a significant step forward in sustainable agriculture and climate action in Switzerland. The verification process was a collaborative effort, with SouthPole, a renowned consulting company, working alongside Applus+ Certification to ensure the thorough and accurate verification of the project.
The verified project, titled "Mooh Cooperative Grouped Project: Reduction of Methane Emissions in the Swiss Dairy Sector", is registered with the VERRA registry under the ID VCS 2751. It falls under the project type of livestock, enteric fermentation, and manure management, with estimated annual emission reductions of 31,640 tCO2eq.
The project, implemented by Mooh Cooperative, is the first of its kind in Switzerland and currently stands as the only VCS-registered project in the country. It aims to reduce methane emissions in the Swiss dairy sector through innovative feeding practices.
The group project activity is implemented on farms operated by milk producers who are members of the Mooh Cooperative in Switzerland. The project's core innovation lies in the implementation of the Agolin® feeding regime for dairy cows, which significantly reduces enteric methane emissions from ruminants.
By targeting methane emissions in livestock, a significant contributor to greenhouse gases, this project addresses a critical area in the fight against climate change. The successful verification by Applus+ Certification confirms the project's effectiveness and its potential for scalable impact in the agricultural sector.
This verification not only verifies the emission reduction efforts but also sets a precedent for future sustainable practices in Swiss agriculture. As the only project of its kind currently registered with VCS in Switzerland, it paves the way for more innovative approaches to reducing the environmental impact of the livestock sector.
Applus+ Certification continues to be at the forefront of sustainability verification, supporting groundbreaking projects that contribute to global climate action goals. With its extensive expertise in testing and certification, Applus+ Certification is well-positioned to drive forward such innovative sustainability initiatives.
