Applus+ Certification verifies first Climate Project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

28/06/2013

This Repsol-managed Electric Mobility project involves the installation of charging stations and the monitoring of subsequent reductions in emissions.

Applus+ Certification, a body recognised by the OECC, the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment’s climate change bureau, has verified the Spanish government’s inaugural Climate Project. The Electric Mobility project has succeeded in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the installation of hundreds of vehicle-charging stations throughout Spain.

Repsol has overseen this project, coordinating and managing the data tracking and monitoring required to calculate the reduction in emissions. The first phase of the project has resulted in a total CO2 reduction of almost 30 tonnes and it is likely that, over the coming years, this figure will increase given the reduction potential.

IBIL, a company half owned by Repsol and Ente Vasco de la Energía (EVE), is responsible for installing the electric charging stations. By the end of 2012, 166 charging stations had already been installed in Spain and a new project is currently underway to expand the network. 129 electric vehicles have used the network to date, which is a real milestone for an initiative of this type in Spain. Over the forthcoming phases of the project, around 400 new charging stations are planned.

With its Climate Projects, Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment aims to reduce the country’s GHG emissions through verifiable projects in sectors that are not subject to the emissions trading sytem. Verified reductions in emissions will count towards the emissions-reduction targets Spain signed up to within the framework of the Kyoto Protocol.

Applus+ Certification is charged with verifying the project, ensuring both the quality of the data collected and the precision of the calculations.
In addition to being a recognised Climate Project verification body, Applus+ Certification is also accredited by the United Nations to verify its Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM) and by ENAC (Spain’s national accreditation agency) for the verification of GHG emissions.
